Archive for April, 2010

For my first wedding of the season I headed over to Vancouver to help Kelsey Goodwin shoot a wedding in Queen Elizabeth Park. It was a beautiful day (even for us wedding photographers, who grumble a little when there are no clouds in the sky), with some big puffy clouds and some excellent views of Vancouver and the mountains. Jessica and Gerard were very excited to get married, but didn’t show any of the nerves that can sometimes accompany the “big” day. Well, except maybe for Jessica initially forgetting her bouquet and her god mother having to run back and get it (this is a very common thing brides forget).  Kelsey and I had fun with the happy couple in the park and even got a yummy snack at The Season’s in the Park Restaurant, during the reception. Here are a few photos from the day:

An Inquisitive Mind

April 24, 2010

I went up island, today, to visit a friend of mine.  Her grandson was staying over and I had brought along my camera, so I took some photos for Carolyne. Her grandson is a doll, and had a lot of fun looking for “treasure” on the beach, playing on the swing and just running around. Kids imaginations and inquisitive minds will never cease to amaze me.

Little shoes are always cute, too bad they never fit.

Hunting for “treasure.”

Bella Boudoir Test Shoot

April 14, 2010

Yesterday I had the pleasure of playing around with the Bella Boudoir ladies, Karen and Jen,  at their adorable studio on Herald St. They asked me to come in and do a little training with them in the hopes of having me lend a hand in the future, as they are getting too darn busy to do it all themselves. So, they brought in two models, Mallory – the blonde and Rowen – the brunette, and we all got to play around; playing with studio lights is one of my FAVORITE things to do. Here are a few shots from the test shoot. If you are interested in getting a boudoir photos done I cannot recommend better photographers, here in Victoria. Their info is all on their website, here.

I haven’t blogged my Tasty Tuesdays in a while (they mostly just make it to my flickr account). So, for those who don’t know what TT are, they are basically old photos from my archives. The name comes from my friend Reuben, and you can check out the original TT here. When I went looking through my archives today though, I found some out takes from a portfolio shot I did for school, so I thought I would show the outtakes and the portfolio shot. A little background for all you non-rowers out there. When you compete in rowing you where a uni-suit, which lead me to the idea of shooting Kevin, my fiance and world champion rower, in a regular ol’ suit in his boat and a uni-suit in an office. So, first the shot from my portfolio:

And now the outtakes, which garnered Kevin and me quite a few comments from the Masters team at Elk Lake.

Kevin looking “cute.”

And Kevin with his “fierce” face.

Ferry Rides and Wind

April 10, 2010

I have a love not so much love relationship with the ferries from Victoria to Vancouver. They seem overly expensive to me, and an hour and a half trip on board ends up taking three hours out of your day because you have to get there early, etc. But the ride is pretty awesome. It is a beautiful trip through the islands and if the weather is nice it is fun to go sit up on the sun deck and enjoy the view. So that is exactly what Kelsey and I did on our way home from Vancouver. We enjoyed the sun, the views and the chance to take some wind-blown photos.

Blog Name Change

April 10, 2010

I haven’t really moved, but I did change the URL, so please update your RSS (or start subscribing to my blog!) I have noticed that the RSS link doesn’t work very well (aka – at all) in Chrome. This seems to be true for most RSS links, not just mine. So, try subscribing in a different internet browser; it will still be in your reader!

The Bella Ladies

April 8, 2010

Two women that I admire here in Victoria are Karen McNeil and Jen Steele and they are the women of Bella Boudoir. All you ladies out there should definitely check out their work! So when they asked me if I would do a portrait of the two of them I said YES! They told me a little bit about what they wanted and somewhere in the conversation the word Porsche came up – luckily my brother in law has ne – and so last night we found ourselves in the abandoned GM parking lot, Porsche and camera in tow.

It can be tough for photographers to get in front of the camera and it can be a little nerve racking photographing other photographers. There were a few times I had to tell these ladies to behave, but most of the time we all had a good laugh.

Today was my most productive day all week, so I decided to photograph some of my accomplishments. Everything in the photo required something from me (other than just setting up the shot). I made the birds, painted the end table and baked the cake. In their previous lives the birds were wire coat hangers, tissue paper and glue. The table I  rescued from next to my dumpster and was an awful teal color; I think I even heard the table say thank you for saving it from the dump and giving it a face lift. And the cake was flour, sugar, and butter before I literally whipped all the ingredients together.

Now it is time to eat the cake!
