Dog Days

June 30, 2010

I love dogs! Growing up I had three different dogs: Piper, Tuck and Molly. All good dogs that I loved and adored. Now I am keeping my fingers very tightly crossed that in 6 weeks I will have my very own little bundle of energy and joy. Kevin and I are getting a Frenchbo (Boston Terrier / French Bulldog mix) and a litter was born on Father’s Day and we are hoping to get one of em! Until then I have to entertain myself with my friends and family’s dogs, so when Carolyne invited me to come meet her Mini Schnauzer puppy, Finn, I jumped up and down squealing with joy, then got in the car and drove to Duncan. So meet Finn:

And his favorite toy, Mr. Hot Pink Duck

Finn is a bit of a coward, but that may be because he was only with Carolyne for three days when I met him.

And Finn loves to chew. On everything.

Puppy dogs move REALLY fast and can be hard to get in focus, looking cute and in the general direction of the camera. But they are still super duper cute, especially Finn.

I had the joy of shooting a wedding with Kelsey (of KGOODPHOTO.com) at Saxe Point two weeks ago. Alysha and Shawn are a couple after my own heart; they took their honeymoon on their bikes down the Oregon Coast. Yeah for bikes!! Yeah for the Oregon Coast!! The wedding and reception were at Saxe Point in Esquimalt and I loved that they had a picnic for a reception, and they couldn’t have had better weather. Thank you Kelsey, Shawn and Alysha for letting me share this special day with you and your fabulous friends and family.

I went to a mixer on Friday (Girls Night Mixer, hosted by Veronique da Silva) and had a great time. Veronique had put out a bunch of quotes for us to look at and there were a few that really stood out to me; so I thought I would share them:

“Don’t be sad that it’s over. Be happy that is happened.”

- Dr. Suess

“It’s not that it is hard that you don’t try, it’s the not trying that makes it hard.”

- unknown

“I think that the most important thing a woman can have – next to talent, of course – is her hairdresser.”

-Mae West

The last quote is most pertinent to this post, but all resonated with me. Now, I don’t know that my hairdresser is the most important person, I’d like to think my family fills that title, but I do have a damn good hair dresser! Amie, at Carreiro Studio, you are the best!

So without any further ado. My hair in 6 parts:

Default Dinner

June 25, 2010

Whenever I am feeling lazy and can’t decide what to make for dinner (yes I am the primary cook in the house), I fall back on a fail proof recipe : grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

It has been pointed out to me, by my step-father, that this is also my Mother’s fall back recipe, so I guess I am more like my mom than I thought.

So thank you mom! I prefer Pacific Food’s Organic Creamy Tomato soup, and cheddar cheese for my sandwiches. I use mayo instead of butter and find that adding mustard to the sandwich gives it a good kick. Also, if you have any ham in the house it goes well inside. I also like a good pickle with my grilled cheese, but I didn’t have any last night.

Oh, did I mention that this dinner takes five minutes to make.  five minutes!

Yum!

This week was a good week. I had a good time Monday night with my friend Ferris – who I have been working on a project with for almost a year now… more on that to come. We did a wedding inspired lamp shoot, which turned out beautifully, even though I thought I might blow over at one point. On Saturday I shot a wedding with Kelsey (more from Saturday to come as well!) and then went over to my in-laws for dinner. I love Dan and Vanessa’s dogs, and Oliver is a bit of a ham, so I did an impromptu photoshoot with him.

For the photos that Ferris took check out her blog.

Fun with flashlights. I would have attempted a better version, but they were closing the gate and we had to get in the car and skedaddle.

Next week will be all about hair!

Yep, I got a bit of a sunburn. Summer is here!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of second shooting a wedding with the fabulous! Karen McNeil. While Karen was taking care of the girls I met up with the boys at Chateau Victoria. After many tying , and retying of ties we got on the bus to head over to Gorge Park for the wedding ceremony. Yes, I said the BUS! Graham’s father is a huge advocate for public transit, and the number 11 happened to be going exactly where we needed to be. I have to say this was the first time I have taken a bus to a wedding, but what fun it was.

Congratulations Ricki and Graham!

Hello Intertubes! I missed posting week 2 of my life as a wife. I was in California, for a funeral, and it just didn’t happen. I am back in Victoria though, and have had a pretty good week:

I love this part of SeaTac airport (and Duty Free; Yes, please! I will take that bottle of gin for $20). The rest of the airport though I can do without – especially the waiting).

Kevin and I got out on our bikes for the first time as husband and wife, and this photo was taken by him. Hard to manage a self portrait on the Galloping Goose while riding.

I have freakishly long arms I know. I blame my father; who’s arms are even more freakishly long. He says our ancestors came out of the trees too early. I say our arms have helped us in things like kayaking, rowing, and reaching for things that are “way up there.”

Kevin and I are dorks, but cute-sy in love dorks.

Enjoy the sun the rest of this weekend. Time for a BBQ!

Kevin and I agreed that one of the ways we could save a bit of money was by not hiring a DJ. We are lucky to have a good friend who is very comfortable talking, mic in hand, who was happy to help with some MC’ing  and we rented some audio equipment from Avista (in San Francisco) and we were set.

Kevin was in charge of the playlists; a very good thing,  because I CANNOT for the life of me remember the name of bands, albums, song titles or even lyrics, even to songs that I like and listen to regularly ( I have the same problem with wine). So, while I was busy making birds and designing menus, Kevin was fretting over the order of songs for dinner, drinks and of course dancing. In the end we had a great dance party that appealed to just about everyone.  My proof of this is that my 87 year old Grandmother was dancing away, along with her great granddaughter (my cousin’s cutie-pie-three-year-old) as well as every other age in between.

So, I thought I would share our playlist with the world for all those brides and grooms to be, who are looking to save a little.
