With American Thanksgiving just days away it only makes sense to post some old photos from last years Thanksgiving. Two of my favorite family recipes from Thanksgiving are my mom’s cranberry relish and an old family recipe for a jello dish. I am not 100% sure what the jello dish recipe is, though I do know it entails lime juice, jello, cream cheese and celery. I know this may sound odd but don’t knock it til you try it (this is the same family that eats peanut butter and pickle sandwiches). The other dish is a little less bizarre and is cranberry relish. My mother has never been one to follow a recipe, but it is something like this:

1 bag cranberries, rinsed and picked over
1 orange
1 cup sugar (you may way to start with 1 cup and add more to taste)
3 tablespoons Cointreau (again this is to taste)

Put all ingredients in a cuisinart and pulse til it looks like relish.
Let sit for at least 10 minutes.

What are your favorite family recipes?

I got a sweet e-mail from my sis this week telling me she misses me. So, like a lot of other TT, this week I am featuring my family. These were taken just over a year ago, on a visit to California. Mere asked me if I could do a photo of her and her dog Harold and while I had the camera out we did a mini “sister series.” If you look closely you can decipher some of how Mere and I act with each other. The last one (bottom right) shows that we both have a bit of ADD, as Harold walked into the photo we both simultaneously leaned down to talk to him in our “doggy voices” (which is similar to how anyone talks to a baby).

The weeks have been flying by since I got my new lil pup, so I thought I would take a deep breath, stop for a minute, and look back on the previous stages of Charlie’s uber cuteness. Now I don’t want to sound like a crazy dog owner, but I may have the cutest dog. Ever! Yes he is a puppy (and he may not be as uber cute in a year) but I get tons of compliments on him. And Kevin and I are teaching him a little trick which only increases his cuteness.

So this was when my heart first melted; the day Kevin and I picked up Charlie and drove him from Oregon to Canada.

And here is his lil trick, though I think I need to record a new video as he is getting better.

I think the first “official” day of Fall was last week, but ever since then the weather seems to have a mind of it’s own and is tricking me into thinking it is still summer. And I am not complaining. I have been enjoying the sun (even if is has been mixed in with some rain), but I have definitely noticed that the sun is going down earlier and earlier. So this weeks Tasty Tuesday is a photo from a shoot I did this summer with the beautiful Terra and Sean (full post can be seen here).

This photo epitomizes summer to me. Growing up, I spent a lot of time on, in and near rivers, especially in the summer. One of my favorite ongoing memories, from childhood, is the quietness of the world on the banks of a river at sunset. I can remember the smell of warm mud, the sound of insects buzzing and the sound of water easing by. Life just seemed as it should be. And when I look at this photo, that is the memory it evokes for me; even if this was shot at Elk Lake and there were screaming geese swimming by.

What is your best memory of summers past?

Another Tasty Tuesday, and another excuse at alliteration, and chance to dig through the archives.

There are lots of things to love in this world. One of the people I love most is Kevin, but there are a lot of people that I love. One of the activities that I love is photography. And one of my favorite combinations of those two things is this photo:

Some of the the other things that I love, and are included in this photo:

The sun - truly can’t live without it!.

Trees, and the forest in general.

Bokeh , it makes photos so much better and is one of the things I love about photography, as you don’t really see bokeh with regular ol vision.

And finally lens flare, another bonus of capturing the world on film, or in this case, on a sensor.

What are the things you love most about photography?

This weeks edition of Tasty Tuesday’s comes from a few days before my wedding. I seem to be pulling a lot of photos from the archives from this time of year, and I think it is because after shooting so many other people’s weddings, I like to look back and remember my own.

Kevin and I did a lot of driving for our wedding. The biggest leg was just getting to California, but even once there we drove back and forth from Sacramento, to Inverness, to San Francisco and back. So on our way to Inverness I decided to break up the boredom and try some long exposures while driving. This one ended up being my favorite. It was shot at f 1.8/ 2 seconds / ISO 800 with my 50mm lens.

I haven’t shot film in a while. And that makes me a little bit sad. I have five film cameras that sit and patiently wait for me to pick them up, load them up, wind them up and take them out for an outing. I used to be so good about film that I would even rewind 120 film onto an old spool so I could shoot with an old Kodak my cousin gave me. Which is where this shot came from. This was taken on an outing I took with my old class mate Matt Kuhn, who is the king of Holga shots. He loves film even more than I do, and you should check out some of his stuff here. I did do a bit of tweaking to it in Photoshop. But I still love that it looks like film.

Maybe I will take my Mamiya out for a walk this weekend…..

Oh boy. I am lagging a bit on the blogging and am super behind on posting my L.A.A.W. post for last week. Bad Jesse. I’ll not run on with excuses, but rest assured I have some.

So this weeks photo from the archives is once again a bit of a series, but it has to be. See, these photos were taken by my very first digital camera. Some version of a 2004-ish Canon point and shoot. It went through a lot: a break-up (mine), a fashplant into the cement (the camera, not me), a plane ride, and a few months of my life in Japan. And then one day, in the Spring, it died. It’s last photos though were of hanami (cherry blossoms) in Japan. The blooming of the cherry blossoms is a BIG deal in Japan and I was out with my Japanese friend, Yoshimi, happily snapping away when things started to shift and eventually, I knew, my camera’s days were over. Sad, yes. But I have found a ways to move on, mostly through retail therapy, specially new cameras -four since this lil guy.

So I dedicate this post to all those dead camera’s out there. I hope that they brought your joy and that their last few days were filled with images of pretty flowers and puppies.

I did adjust some levels in this photo, but the color is how it came out of the camera and was the first indicator that things were off. Now I kind of like it.

I don’t normally do this (post two photoss) but I have been catching up on a bunch of editing and these are two of my favorite pictures I have gone through today. First, is my sister (again), and I am hoping my mother will like this one, cause Mere is actually smiling. Even if it is a tiny smile. The second one is my brother, Cam, who is growing up to be super handsome, as well as talented. I loved the light in this one especially, and Cam finally seems to be coming around to me taking photos of him, which I love even more. These were both was taken at my cousin Gillian’s awesome wedding in Winters, which I posted about here. I took lots of photos of Gillian and Paul, but I also had a chance to get some really great shots of my more immediate family.
